Which court hears what in North Las Vegas?

North Las Vegas Municipal Court has jurisdiction over traffic violations and misdemeanor offenses that occur within the city limits. The City Attorney prosecutes only misdemeanor offenses inside the city, including driving under the influence, and the city notes misdemeanors carry up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

North Las Vegas Justice Court (North Las Vegas Township) has three elected Justices of the Peace. It hears probable cause matters, arraignments, preliminary hearings, misdemeanor and traffic trials, evictions, small claims up to $10,000 and civil matters up to $15,000. The Municipal Court sends questions about evictions, small claims and protective orders there.

Injury cases worth more than $15,000 go to the Eighth Judicial District Court, where most are reviewed for the court-annexed arbitration program; see arbitration and short trials in Clark County.

What is the city doing about crashes?

The City of North Las Vegas has adopted a goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2040, through a Zero Fatalities proclamation and a Local Road Safety Plan prepared with the Nevada Department of Transportation. The plan's data, which runs through 2019, shows deaths and serious injuries on local and state roads in the city falling from 126 in 2015 to 43 in 2019, a 65 percent drop over that period. Those are the plan's historical figures, not current numbers. For current county-wide figures, see our Clark County accident page.

How does the claim side work after a North Las Vegas crash?

The insurance claim follows statewide rules. Nevada is a fault state with minimum liability limits of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per crash and $20,000 for property (NRS 485.185). Insurers must acknowledge a claim within 20 working days and begin investigating within 20 working days, and your own insurer must accept or deny within 30 working days of a complete proof of loss; see how long an insurer has to respond in Nevada.

What is local is the paperwork. The crash report comes from NLVPD rather than Las Vegas Metro, and the city routes report purchases through its online vendor. Insurers usually ask for that report early, so ordering it as soon as it is available keeps the claim from stalling. If the other driver was cited, the North Las Vegas Municipal Court case runs on its own schedule. In Nevada, a conviction for the crime that caused the injury is conclusive evidence of the facts needed for civil liability (NRS 41.133), which can matter later.

If the claim does not settle, the size of the case decides the court: North Las Vegas Justice Court for $15,000 or less, the district court above that. The 2-year deadline for injury lawsuits applies either way (NRS 11.190).

What changes the answer

A freeway crash. Freeways through North Las Vegas go to the state police, with their own report process; see how to get a crash report in the valley. Commercial truck crashes on the freeways are covered in who investigates a truck crash on a Las Vegas freeway.

A truck. Industrial areas mean commercial traffic; truck crashes bring federal rules and higher insurance minimums. See what happens after a truck accident in Las Vegas.

A motorcycle. Riders can read what happens after a motorcycle crash in Las Vegas.

A city vehicle. Claims against North Las Vegas carry Nevada's $200,000 per-claimant cap and no punitive damages (NRS 41.035); see crashes with a government vehicle.

Neighboring areas. A crash just outside city limits may be LVMPD's; see our City of Las Vegas page. Henderson has its own page too: Henderson crash claims.

For example: a crash on a city street

Imagine a hypothetical driver named Malia hit by a driver who ran a stop sign inside North Las Vegas. NLVPD investigates and cites the other driver. Malia buys the accident report online through the link on the city's Police Records page. The citation is handled in North Las Vegas Municipal Court, separately from her injury claim. Her medical bills and lost pay are well over $15,000, so if the claim does not settle it would be filed in district court before the 2-year deadline (NRS 11.190). This example is hypothetical.

Common mistakes after a North Las Vegas crash

  • Asking LVMPD for the report. North Las Vegas crashes are NLVPD reports.
  • Sending a mail request without a notarized letter. Mail requests need ID, a notarized letter with the case number and a stamped return envelope.
  • Paying by personal check. The records office does not accept them.
  • Confusing the two courts. Municipal Court handles city misdemeanors; Justice Court handles civil claims up to $15,000.
  • Relying on old crash figures. The road safety plan's data ends in 2019.
  • Waiting for the citation to be resolved. The Municipal Court case and your injury claim are separate, and your deadline keeps running while the criminal case moves.

What to do this week

  1. Confirm the crash was inside North Las Vegas city limits.
  2. Note the NLVPD case number and buy the report online when available.
  3. If the other driver was cited, note the Municipal Court case.
  4. Check whether you owe the DMV an SR-1; see when an SR-1 is required.
  5. Keep every medical record and bill. For the full path, read what happens after a car accident in Las Vegas.
